RIVIERA BEACH
RIVIERA BEACH — Landscaped medians, decorative street lights and other improvements along a 11/2-mile stretch of Broadway will be discussed during an open house with state road officials set for 5- 7:30 p.m. today at Newcomb Hall, next to the city marina at 180 E. 13th St. The Florida Department of Transportation plans to begin work in the summer of 2012 on a $7.5 million beautification of Broadway (U.S. 1) from south of 12th Street to Silver Beach Road.
HOUSE FIRE
JUNO BEACH — A fire possibly sparked by a blown power transformer damaged a home off Ellison Wilson Road on Monday evening, fire officials said. Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue workers were called to 2091 N. Palm Circle at about 8:30p.m. and found the home engulfed in flames, Capt. Don DeLucia said. Firefighters quickly got the blaze under control and no one was injured. The cause was under investigation.

WEST PALM BEACH — A sitting county court judge, a school board attorney and four lawyers in private practice are in line to replace retiring Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Edward Garrison. Out of 22 who applied, the local Judicial Nominating Commission on Monday recommended the following names to Gov. Charlie Crist: County Judge James Martz; school board attorney Elizabeth McBride; West Palm Beach lawyers Gregory Keyser, Marshall Osofsky and Louis Williams; and Palm Beach Gardens attorney Wendy Zoberman. The governor has 60 days to make the appointment.

THE ACREAGE — A man changing his car’s oil was badly hurt Monday evening when a jack gave way and his car crushed him, officials said. The 55-year-old man was working on his car at his home on 71st Place North at about 8:20p.m., Palm Beach Fire-Rescue Capt. Don DeLucia said. The man, whose name was not released, was flown by helicopter to St. Mary’s Medical Center, DeLucia said
